The Amazon Rainforest in Puerto Maldonado

For many the highlight of the trip was the visit to the Amazon rainforest. With plenty of oxygen available again everybody perked up within hours after landing in Puerto Maldonado from where we took a 3-hour boat ride on the Tambopata River to the Sachavacayoc jungle lodge, property of Newton College.

Our guide, the awesome Mr. Bruggers, could spot a tiny little macaw or Capuccino monkey in the foliage of a tree hundres of meters away. He knew every noise of the jungle and wrestled snakes and cayman with his bare hands so that we could get an up-close look at them.

One night we slept out in the open on a wooden platform with a mosquito net and a sleeping bag as only separation between us and "the wild outdoors."
Everybody agreed that this was the perfect way to end the Traveling Notes 2008 Festival!
